Advantages of Using Aluminium over Copper for Making Coils

While people in the past have long preferred the use of copper for manufacturing coils, the scenario since a couple of decades has turned the tables. Aluminium has rapidly captured the market as the best metal for the production of coils for HVAC systems and many other industrial machineries. The simple reason that follows is the plethora of benefits that aluminum speaks which overdo its counterpart metals. The cost of using aluminum is also comparatively lower than that of copper, and this is one reason why the cost of products that have or are made using aluminum coils has significantly reduced. The number of aluminum coil suppliers have also increased since then.

Let’s take a look at how aluminum is better than copper. 

Cost and Pliability – Copper is comparatively a costlier metal. This means that the cost of making items that require copper also significantly increases. In order to reduce the cost of manufacturing units, aluminum is considered a better option. It has, over the years, also become a popular choice in the manufacturing market.

Pliability on the other hand, that defines the ability of a metal to bend easily, makes aluminum a more preferred choice. The metal can be bent easily into any desired shape. Hence, to make a coil of the same size and shape, manufacturers require three times less aluminum than copper, which further makes the process comparatively cheaper.

Strength and Reliability – While copper is easier to repair, a simple fact cannot be ignored – copper coil can break down faster than aluminum. The crux of the story, aluminum is much stronger and reliable than its counterpart metals.

Ease of maintenance – Most aluminum coil suppliers state that condenser coils are placed in units that are affixed in environments outside the house. This means that they are exposed to hard climatic conditions and need regular cleaning for better functionality. Installing aluminum coils is a better option because of their strength. They do get dirty, but cleaning them is relatively easy.

Corrosion – This is yet another factor that demands attention while choosing between the aluminum coils and copper coils. Corrosion plays a vital role in defining the life of a machinery, as it damages the coils which further hamper the working of the entire system. Corrosion damages due to humid climates are higher than other factors. The metal of aluminum when quoted with a special corrosion free element, can smartly stay intact for a longer period than in the case of copper.

Veterans of the industry state that aluminium surfaces when layered with blue hydrophylic coating performs 3 times better and longer under 5% NaCl spray than original, raw aluminium fins.

Thanks to such coatings that aluminium fins, the corrosive resistance of metals which are otherwise costly and daunting to process, can be obtained at a much economical rate. The larger picture to look at is that its essential to determine the need for accuracy and apply the coating to enable the metal to sustain its properties in long run.
